The Great Gatsby Soundtrack Sampler

Interscope Records have released a sampler on YouTube of the soundtrack to the upcoming film adaptation of The Great Gatsby. The upcoming movie, directed by Baz Luhrmann and starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role, features a soundtrack produced by Jay Z, as well as a score by Craig Armstrong.

When I first heard that Jay Z was doing the soundtrack to Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, I was more than a little skeptical. How on earth could a hip-hop/rap artist do music to fit the jazz-ness of the roaring twenties? But the latest trailer for the film came out, featuring an Amy Winehouse cover by Beyonce, and Young And Beautiful by Lana Del Rey, and it all seemed to fall into place. And now the sampler has come out, and whatever Luhrmann does with the film, the soundtrack may be one of the best of the year. But maybe I’m too optimistic. I’m a big fan of Luhrmann’s films, I even liked Australia, though no, I didn’t love it. It wasn’t that good.

Love Is Blindness, a U2 cover by Jack White I already loved from an earlier trailer of the film. ” A Little Party Never Killed Nobody”, by Fergie, Q Tip and GoonRock is available to listen to in full on Interscope’s Soundcloud page, and is quite fun, and seems to fit a Gatsby party perfectly, though probably wasn’t quite like the songs they played back in the 20s. What does though is the version of Beyonce’s Crazy In Love, by Emeli Sande and the Bryan Ferry Orchestra. I can’t wait to hear most of these songs in full.

The soundtrack releases on May 7th, and the film comes out May 10th in the US and 17th here in the UK.
